Robert lives in Rancho Cordova near Sacramento, California. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Houston in political science and a law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law.  His early career began in the tree business, founding Arbor Excellence Tree Care and later becoming a board-certified master arborist. He then joined Pacific Gas & Electric Company and held such positions as Senior Vegetation Program Manager and Senior Contract Specialist. Robert passed the California Bar exam.
